1/5-1/12

Analyzing a myth for the theme.

Standard:  LAFS.8.RL.1.2 Determine a theme of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.

Directions:  After reading the myth, “Pandora’s Box” on pages 456-459.

  • ·         Write about the dynamic characters and tell how each character played an important role.
  • ·         Then research the setting by rereading the myth and state the various places the myth took place.
  • ·         Next, summarize the plot of the story; include the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
  • ·         You will then identify the symbols (the symbolic items) in the myth and state how they actually mean more than the simplicity of the item(s).
  • ·         Lastly, you will use all four elements and ask yourself, “What did the author want to teach me?”  This is the theme of the story.

You will then draw a dowry casket and in a creative manner you will write about the setting, characters, plot, symbols, and theme of the myth; create your design on construction paper or copy paper.  Feel free to use your imagination and have fun with this assignment.

Note:  time will be given during two class periods to work on this task and it is due on Wednesday, 1/14 for A day and Thursday, 1/15 for B day

Note:  on Tuesday, 1/13 (B day) I will have a sub.  Do NOT turn your assignment in to the sub.

Additionally, since the quarter ends on January 15, I will not have time to grade all of the assignments; therefore, this task will be entered in on the grade portal as a quarter three assignment.
